Making Disciples for Jesus Christ

United Methodist Women

The United Methodist Women is the largest denominational faith organization for women within the United Methodist Church, and is called "a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through the participation in the global ministries of the church."

In the Cressey Road United Methodist Church, the UMW is involved in many of the fundraising activities and donations to outside organizations. The women who gather together to work for the ministries of this church are tireless and dedicated, and their passion to honor God and make disciples of Jesus Christ is always evident. Their organization includes local coordinators for areas, such as: Spiritual Growth, Nurture and Outreach of Members, Social Involvement, and Education and Interpretation.

Just some of their activities each year:

  • Providing for the church's coffee fellowship once a month
  • Assemblying Valentine's Plates and Christmas Friendship Plates each year, to benefit shut-in members of the church and members of Gorham House and the Inn at Village Square.
  • Hosting the spring and fall Rummage Sales.
  • Coordinating the World Thank Offering in October.
  • Holding a pot luck or luncheon fundraiser.
  • Bringing in speakers from the community to learn more about the area's needs.
  • Hosting a Memorial Reception.
  • Helping with literature and program costs.
  • Adding to the Pastor's Discretionary Fund for fuel assistance.
  • Buying materials and equipment for the Kitchen, as well as doing a bi-annual, thorough cleaning of the kitchen.
  • Helping with the Prayer Shawls and Angel Tree project.

They have made contributions not only to Cressey Road UMC itself, but to groups such as the Heifer Project, Gifts in Honor and Gifts in Memory, Rockland Home, the Root Cellar, Shoe Box Ministry, Gorham Food Pantry, the Salem Economic Ministry, Cooper Community Center, Catholic Charities, UMCOR, and Least Coin.

They are also very involved with giving camperships and donations to Camp Mechuwana here in Maine!

As one can see, they are very active and very effective. If you or a woman you know truly wants to make a difference in this world, and to work with a great group of women, please contact the church for more information!
