Thoughts on Giving
Many people think that all a church does is ask for money. After all, what other organization sets aside a particular day and time, every week, to hold a meeting for its members, and then has a particular time during that meeting to publicly ask you to give? And even passes around a plate for you to put your donation into!
However, there is much more than asking for money involved!
We all know and understand that everything we have is given to us from God. Our skills, our abilities, our homes, our cars, our families, our very lives! We have been given these things so that we may take care of the place that God has given us to live upon. We are God's stewards of the Earth. We have dominion over-- and therefore care and responsibility for-- all of God's creations.
Of course, "given" might be the wrong word. "Lent" might be better, because we are only on this Earth for a very short time. And, except for our spiritual gifts (which actually ARE given to us to be able to care for this world), all of our material gifts are left behind when we return to God's kingdom. But... should we just let our "gifts" sit and benefit us rather than using them for God's will while we are still on Earth? Or should they be used to help make disciples of Jesus Christ and to help all of us grow in our spiritual journey?
In addition, generosity and giving are two things which God wants us to do with a grateful heart! 2 Corinthians, 9:6, tells us to, "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you shall give what you in your heart have decided to give, not reluctantly, or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
Finally, our generosity is a demonstration to others of Christ's love and caring throughout the world. It shows that when we follow Him, we become more like Him with our desire to help others. "Because of the service by which you've proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone."  (2 Corinthians, 9:13)
THAT is why the church asks for a small part of your "gifts" each week. And, those gifts include your time and attendance, as well.

May we ask a favor? If you're giving online, may we suggest that you use your own bank's "Bill Pay" service? This costs you nothing, is completely under your control, and saves the church any credit card or processing fees! Also, could we suggest that you schedule payments either weekly or monthly? This can also be done on our site, and relieves you of bringing cash or a checkbook to church. It also makes sure that you are able to make your donation even if you are unable to make church for some reason. In winter, "snow days" can make a dent in our ability to receive donations, since the church may be closed. By scheduling an online payment (even by using your own bank's "bill pay" program), we all can be assured that funding for the church and its missions is not interrupted.
Thank you, and God bless you.
